My name is Jasmine I am from Ottawa, Canada. I have obtained a bachelor of arts with honours in the Anthropology program at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada. During my time in my post-secondary studies I worked in a variety of education and youth related fields. In 2016 I worked for the Canadian Ministers of Education focusing on the Pan-Canadian Assessment Test. Following this from 2017- 2018 I worked at the YMCA. During the time of my employment there I got involved with a variety of programs that gave me exposure to working with children ages 6 months – 14 years old. Towards the end of 2018 I came to China to work at the Thomas Shanghai International School where I functioned as a Sports teacher and Homeroom teacher to our grade 10 student body. As we shared the campus at the time with Jinyuan Senior High school I also enjoyed the opportunity to teach English to 8 of their classes. Lastly during the first half of 2019 I also worked at Early Beginnings Kindergarten teaching the children there the fundamentals of the English language.

My educational paradigm is one of close social proximity to the students. Through maintaining close social ties to the students, they become more comfortable and thus more willing to engage in the class thereby allowing them to receive more from the fruits of their labour. I believe in harnessing the natural curiosity of students in order for them to be the engines of their own educational achievements. I aim to create a positive environment where students don’t feel pressured by the fear of failure but rather seek to better themselves through maintaining a healthy and progressive mindset. In my sports classes I focus on 5 areas to develop the students: Willingness to participate, Preparation, Sportsmanship, Cooperation and the application of new knowledge.

Throughout the first year teaching at Thomas School our students enjoyed such foreign sports as Hockey, Frisbee, and American Football. In the future I hope to further develop these and promote more access to sports that Chinese students are otherwise unfamiliar with.  My ultimate wish is for me to be a part of the process that grows these students into global minded citizens so that they will be better prepared to make lasting changes in the world of tomorrow.
